Past UK Fossil Live/Open to all Events at Kintradwell
14th June 2005

In Scotland, it doesn’t get dark till late and on a fine, clear night it doesn’t get dark at all. This gives the opportunity for three locations a day. The tidal conditions are also in our favour.

In 2002, we attempted to visit Kintradwell but couldn’t find access to the shore, the alternative was to walk from Lothbeg, or from Brora both of which are a 3 mile walk. Access to Kintradwell can be made by one railway foot crossing near Greenhill which cuts the journey down to one and a half miles. The problem is from Brora to Lothbeg there is only one lay-by, this is also a very busy road.

Three streams also cross the beach, due to the heavy rain Scotland has had during the past few weeks, crossing these proved difficult and wet feet was inevitable.

In spite of the difficulty in accessing this site, within the Kintradwell Boulder Beds a possible ichthyosaurus tooth and a shark spine was found (these to be identified once more of the matrix is carefully removed). Photos have been taken of these in situ and when they are cleaned and preserved these will be re-photographed. Ammonites, belemnites, bivalves and plant material can also be found here. Most of the beds where covered with sand at the time we visited but one wave cut platform, approx. 2 metres long was exposed. Within this platform, other bone fragments could be seen.
